First of all, let me begin by saying that skitching (traveling on skates by holding onto the back of a car) is quite dangerous. But if you insist on doing it, there are a few tips that should help you in being as safe as possible.
First of all, try and stay on the side of the vehicle, as opposed to behind it so you can see the road in front of you. After all, if you can't see the road ahead of you, you can't see the bumps, and are certifiably suicidal!!
Another important point is to know where you are going. If you know the streets that you are skitching on, you will know where to avoid, and what safe emergency exit routes are.
As for the ride itself, you really need to be comfortable before you get up too much speed. By doing this, you can more fully concentrate more on the ride, and less on how much your fingers/feet/whatever are hurting. Also, it is quite advisable to pull with one hand and push with the other. This will allow you to both control vehicle acceleration and slowing down with ease.
As a final note, if and when you fall, make sure to absorb the fall by rolling. And your first priority should be to get out of the road ASAP, because getting run over by a car will hurt much more than falling when you are going 30! After you are out of the road, then check to make sure you are ok.
Sooo... Good luck, and be safe.
Don't forget a few people have died skitching, so be smart. Skitching adds an unpredictable element-- the cars and stupid humans driving them.
