Remember stalls skating street? You always learned the stall for a grind before attempting it? Well, the same principle applies here. A stall is where you pump up the ramp, and come to rest on the coping (the metal bar) at the top of the half-pipe, before dropping back in.
To stall, you have to aim to get above the coping with your regular pumps. Pump up the side of the half-pipe like you would normally, and keep your body relaxed as you reach the top of the transition. When you get to the top, let your feet click onto the coping. You'll need to stay relaxed and lift up the front of your skates so that they don't catch. (Just like popping your front wheel on a bike when hitting a curb) It may take a bit of practice to get the coping in between your middle two wheels, but it will come to you after an hour or so.
Now you are standing on top of the coping and you want to get back down. What you do is simply follow the method you would use for dropping in backwards. If you can 180 on the half-pipe with no problems, go for a backside stall so you can do a normal drop-in. If you don't lean over the coping enough (to land the stall), you will drop back in naturally as gravity gets hold of you again. If you go too far on top of the coping, you'll just skate off onto the top of the ramp. So don't worry if you find yourself falling backwards or forwards.
You can do loads of different stalls, depending on what grind you want to try. You can also do cab stalls (backwards 360 stalls), or half-cab stalls, or whatever you want. Throw as many variations as you want in.
